Weaving

The HandiCraft Weaving program is a 50 weeks part time program and on completion of the program the trainee will be competent in safety in the craft room, learning about frame weaving techniques and equipment, make frame woven articles and using applicable yarns, and finishing techniques for woven articles.

The trainee will attend classes of three hours per day, once a week. The trainee will receive small assignments/articles to complete before the next class outside the training hours in the craft production room. Upon successful completion of the assignments/articles the trainee will receive the opportunity to start to do production on articles and generate income for paying for the classes and buying additional yarn to produce articles for selling to customers.

The skills that the trainee will acquire through this program are safety in the sewing room, terminology, making different woven products, market trends and requirements, colour and texture, yarns, creative expression in weaving and measurements and measuring techniques. Frame weaving techniques and equipment will included tools and equipment for weaving and finishing, patterns and instructions, frames for weaving, warp and weaving techniques and web formation. In finishing techniques for woven articles the trainee will learn about finishing and decorating woven articles, assembly of articles, quality, marketability, pricing and marketing and selling a woven article.

On the successfully completion of the HandiCraft – Weaving Skills Program the trainee will receive a certificate of competence and will be able to work as an entrepreneur and run his or her own small weaving business.
